Starting in the mid 1800s Tasmania had a large industry of growing hops. This has tapered off over the last few decades, but there are reminders – Oast Houses. As you drive around you occasionally stumble on these wonderful barns (my word). They were designed for drying hops with wood fired kilns. I had never heard of these, but they appear to be world-wide. Many today have been turned into houses. All them have a large tall round or multi-sided turret attached to a 2-4 story building. They look like cathedrals. … It’s time for a beer.
